French nursing home suspends admissions amid resident mistreatment and staffing crisis

The Les Ormes nursing home in Pornic, France, faces a temporary ban on new admissions, a decision jointly imposed by the regional health agency (ARS) of Pays de la Loire and the departmental council of Loire-Atlantique. This measure, in effect since June 1, stems from a series of reported shortcomings in the facility's operations and resident care.

Since February, eight new complaints from families have highlighted significant issues, particularly concerning staffing levels, hygiene standards, and the overall support provided to residents. These concerns have placed the facility under intense scrutiny, with authorities having monitored it since at least January. The ARS noted that "dysfunctions and persistent fragilities, particularly in terms of organization and team stability," led to an initial extension of the admission suspension in early summer.

Reports from Ouest-France detail allegations of mistreatment, with residents reportedly losing significant weight and exhibiting bruises and abrasions. Some were allegedly left in bed all day, with rooms and beds left uncleaned. Families also reported issues with lost prosthetics and inadequate meals. One employee who resigned told the newspaper that they believed residents were "in danger" due to chronic understaffing and equipment shortages, exacerbated by staff departures following increased workloads and the elimination of bonuses.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for September 21. The duration of the admission suspension may be revised based on the facility's progress in addressing these critical issues. At least one complaint has reportedly been filed with the gendarmerie.
