French saber fencers crowned world champions in Hong Kong, France's sole title at the event

The French men's saber fencing team secured the world championship title in Hong Kong, triumphing over South Korea with a decisive 45-31 victory. This win represents France's sole title at the World Championships, concluding the competition with a total of four medals, all earned in saber events.

The men's saber team's gold medal is a significant achievement, being their first world title in this discipline since 2006. The team, including Rémi Garrigue and the Patrice brothers, established an early lead against the world number one and Olympic champions, South Korea. Sébastien Patrice delivered the final winning touch against Olympic champion Oh Sang-uk.

Individual performances also contributed to France's success. Sara Balzer earned a silver medal, and the young fencer Toscane Tori secured a bronze. Despite these individual successes, the French team finished third in the overall medal standings, behind Italy and South Korea.

This triumph comes a month after the European Championships, where French fencers had a strong showing with three titles and ten medals. The men's saber team, however, had faced a challenging individual competition without reaching the podium. Meanwhile, the French foil team, featuring world champion Ysaora Thibus, was eliminated in the semifinals by the United States and later lost to Japan, leaving them without a medal.
