French troupe brings giant mechanical elephants to Taipei for free street performance

Taipei is set to be transformed into a vibrant street party as the renowned French street art troupe Groupe F presents their spectacular outdoor performance, "Big Elephant is Coming...". The highly anticipated event, which marks the opening of the 2026 Taipei Arts Festival, will take place on September 5 and 6, offering the public a unique and free artistic experience.

The highlight of the performance will be the appearance of three colossal mechanical elephants, accompanied by a procession of dancers and musicians. These giants will parade from Jihe Road to the outdoor plaza of the Taipei Performing Arts Center. The spectacle will incorporate bagpipes, drumbeats, and costumes representing the five continents, aiming to break down traditional theater boundaries and turn streets and arcades into a carnival atmosphere.

Groupe F founder Jean-Raymond Jacob described the mission of street art as connecting disparate communities, emphasizing its value in "gathering" and "sharing." He noted that the troupe's performances are not mere exhibitions but collaborative creations with local communities. For "Big Elephant is Coming..." in Taipei, they have partnered with Taiwanese groups such as the Body & Soul Theater and Xuan Yu Music Ensemble to create a version specifically tailored for the city.

Established in 1982, Groupe F is globally recognized for its large-scale outdoor performances and urban carnivals, skillfully constructing temporary stages in public spaces. This Taipei production is supported by the Taipei City Government and private enterprises, inviting residents to witness the captivating fusion of street and theater. Attendees are advised to use the MRT Tamsui-Xinyi Line to Shilin Station, Exit 2, to avoid crowds at Jiantan Station.
