Frenchman Fires on Police Believing Macron Deposed Amid 'Revolution'

An 82-year-old man in France, convinced that a revolution had begun and President Macron had been ousted, fired on gendarmes before surrendering. The incident occurred Saturday evening near Nogent-le-Rotrou in the Eure-et-Loir region.

The man, armed with a rifle and ammunition, emerged from his home shouting slogans like "It's the revolution" and "Macron has been deposed," according to a statement from the Chartres prosecutor's office. Responding to a report from the man's wife, five gendarmes from the local Surveillance and Intervention Platoon arrived at the scene.

They were informed by the man's daughter that he was in the garden, armed and hidden. As the gendarmes approached cautiously while attempting to engage him in dialogue, the man fired three shots in their direction, hitting two officers in the legs. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Following the exchange of fire, the suspect retreated into his home's basement, possibly with a hand injury sustained during the police response. The GIGN, France's elite intervention group, was dispatched to handle the negotiation and apprehension. After a four-hour standoff, the man surrendered without further resistance around 8:50 p.m.

Initial investigations revealed the man to be a retiree with no known prior judicial history. He was transported to a hospital for surgery on a projectile lodged in his hand and subsequently placed in custody, deemed medically fit for detention. A psychiatric evaluation is scheduled.
