Nietzsche’s broader lesson, as presented here, is to question what appears obvious. An idea should not be accepted merely because it comes from an authority, a tradition or someone considered superior. It should undergo personal examination.

Disagreement can help with that process. Hearing a different position may reveal arguments that had been overlooked and force someone to examine the reasons behind a belief. This does not mean every opinion deserves acceptance. Critical thinking also involves rejecting an argument when its reasoning is unconvincing.

Surrounding oneself exclusively with people who agree can make certainty comfortable, but it can also make mistakes harder to recognize. Opposing views introduce discomfort and may lead a person to revise an opinion. Independent thought therefore does not require rejecting other people’s ideas. It requires preserving the ability to assess them without deciding in advance that someone deserves more respect simply because they agrees with us.
