From Black Panther roots to global icon: The life and tragic end of Tupac Shakur

Tupac Amaru Shakur, globally recognized as 2Pac, remains one of history's most influential rap artists. His life and work were a potent mix of talent, controversy, and profound social engagement. Through his music, Shakur gave voice to the marginalized, exploring themes of racial injustice, poverty, and police brutality, becoming a voice for a generation.

Born in East Harlem, New York, on June 16, 1971, Shakur's roots were deeply embedded in activism. His mother, Afeni Shakur, was a Black Panther, and his biological father, Billy Garland, also had ties to the organization. This background, coupled with a sometimes unstable family life and his mother's struggles with addiction, shaped his early years. His family later moved to Baltimore, where he studied acting, poetry, jazz, and ballet at the Baltimore School for the Arts, befriending actress Jada Pinkett.

Shakur's artistic journey began in the late 1980s. After joining the hip-hop group Digital Underground, he launched his solo career with "2Pacalypse Now" in 1991, an album that openly tackled poverty and police brutality, sparking controversy. His subsequent albums, including "Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z..." and "Me Against the World," achieved platinum status and critical acclaim. His 1996 double album, "All Eyez on Me," featuring hits like "California Love," became a multiplatinum success.

Beyond music, Shakur was a compelling actor, debuting in "Juice" (1992) and starring in "Poetic Justice" (1993) alongside Janet Jackson. His career, both musical and cinematic, was tragically cut short by his murder at age 25. The investigation into his death remains open, spawning numerous conspiracy theories that persist nearly three decades later.
