From New Girl to Modern Family: 10 Beloved Shows and Films Making a Comeback

Hollywood is looking backward, with familiar sitcoms and romantic comedies from the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s being revisited through sequels, spin-offs and reunion discussions.

New Girl briefly appeared to be heading back to the loft after Max Greenfield, who played Schmidt, said he had seen reunion scripts from creator Liz Meriwether. Greenfield described the material as "amazing" and suggested the project was moving forward. Meriwether later told Variety that no scripts or official reunion plans currently exist. Public cast reunions this year have nevertheless kept fan interest alive.

Modern Family has also returned to the conversation. Jesse Tyler Ferguson discussed a proposed spin-off centered on Mitchell and Cameron after their move to Missouri with their children. The project followed the sitcom’s 2020 finale, but ABC chose not to proceed. Ferguson said he had also been ready to move on after 11 seasons as Mitchell.

A more concrete project is developing at Paramount. A sequel to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days entered early development in August, with Kate Hudson attached as a producer alongside Stacey Sher. The film does not yet have a writer or confirmed plot, and neither Hudson nor Matthew McConaughey has officially signed on to reprise Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry.

The Princess Diaries 3 is also described as official, adding another familiar title to Hollywood’s growing list of possible or confirmed returns.
