FRSC confirms 9 dead, 17 injured in Katsina highway crash

A fatal road accident on the Kankia-Katsina Road in Katsina State, Nigeria, has claimed the lives of nine people and left 17 others injured. The crash occurred Saturday evening involving a commercial bus and a trailer.

Shamsudeen Babajo, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Public Education Officer, confirmed the incident, stating that it happened at Kwanar Gidan Mutum Daya around 8:03 p.m. The collision affected a total of 26 individuals. FRSC personnel responded swiftly, arriving at the scene within 23 minutes to begin rescue operations.

The rescue team worked tirelessly to evacuate victims and clear the obstruction to restore free flow of traffic along the route.

Of the 17 injured victims, many sustained severe injuries including fractures and broken limbs. Tragically, four of the deceased were burned beyond recognition after the commercial vehicle caught fire following the impact. The injured were evacuated to General Hospital Kankia, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital mortuary.

The FRSC Sector Commander expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Preliminary investigations into the cause of the crash are underway. The corps used the incident to urge motorists to avoid speeding and reckless driving, particularly with the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festive travel period. Drivers were also advised to ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound for long journeys, and passengers encouraged to report unsafe driving.
