Fruit, Beef and Mackerel Up to 50% Off as South Korea Provides 103 Billion Won for Chuseok Relief

South Korea will spend a record 103 billion won to reduce household costs during the Chuseok holiday, with discounts covering food, travel and cultural activities.

From the 3rd, retailers will offer discounts of up to 40% on apples, pears, beef and other agricultural and livestock products. From the 9th, consumers will receive discounts of up to 50% on pollock, mackerel, seaweed and other major seafood products. Gift sets will receive discounts of up to 50% for agricultural products and 53% for seafood.

The package also targets processed food. About 4,700 items, including ramen and bread, will receive discounts of up to 64%. The government said the measures form part of a broader plan to ease the burden on households and support domestic consumption.

Digital Onnuri gift certificates will receive a temporary discount increase to 10% from September 16 to 20, before the holiday. The purchase limit will rise by 200,000 won to 1.2 million won. Starting September 22, the government will distribute 80,000 lodging coupons for areas outside the capital region. A stay costing at least 70,000 won will qualify for a 30,000-won discount, or 50,000 won on islands.

The government will also distribute 220,000 one-time discounts worth 10,000 won for performing arts from the 1st. Highway tolls will be waived from September 24 to 27, and free admission will be pursued for national heritage sites, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and national recreation forests. Policy finance for ordinary households, vulnerable groups and young people will total 480 billion won, while small businesses and midsize companies will receive 43.4 trillion won in holiday loans and guarantees. The government will extend 62.4 trillion won in maturing loans and guarantees by one year and plans to pay disaster assistance before Chuseok to fish farms affected by high water temperatures and residents hit by July floods.
