Fuel Prices Drop Slightly in Romania Amidst Crisis Measures

Fuel prices in Romania experienced a minor dip on Saturday, August 8, offering a slight reprieve to drivers. In major cities, the average price for a liter of gasoline settled at 9.32 lei, while diesel was priced at 10.47 lei.

However, this daily decrease masks a more significant upward trend over the past month. According to Peco Online, the average price of gasoline has climbed by 10.3%, meaning a 50-liter fill-up now costs 44.5 lei more than last month. Diesel prices have seen an even steeper rise of 14.5%, adding 68.5 lei to the cost of a full tank.

These fluctuations occur against the backdrop of a new law aimed at managing fuel market crises. President Nicușor Dan promulgated the legislation on August 4, which allows for a temporary reduction of excise duty on diesel and introduces a solidarity contribution. The law defines a crisis as major disruptions like armed conflicts or supply issues. During such periods, diesel excise duty can be temporarily lowered by 5%-25%, with the Ministry of Finance monitoring and adjusting the reduction based on price evolution. Exports and intra-community deliveries of diesel and crude oil will require official approval while the crisis measures are in effect.
