Fuel Prices on Tuesday, Sept. 1: Diesel Falls After Excise Tax Cut, but Prices Vary by Station

Romanian drivers could find noticeably different prices from one fuel station to another on Tuesday, Sept. 1, even after diesel became cheaper following an excise tax reduction.

The tax change lowered the pump price of diesel by about 17 bani per liter. Data compiled by Peco Online shortly before 9 a.m. showed the cheapest gasoline at 9.48 lei per liter at a Socar station in Suceava. The lowest diesel price, 10.09 lei per liter, appeared at a DHR station on Plopilor Street in Cluj-Napoca.

Among Romania’s five largest cities, minimum gasoline prices ranged from 9.48 to 9.51 lei per liter. Minimum diesel prices ranged from 10.09 lei in Cluj-Napoca to 10.14 lei in Bucharest, Iași and Constanța. GPL prices ranged from 4.59 lei in Cluj-Napoca to 4.64 lei in Timișoara and Iași.

Peco Online warned that its figures may differ slightly from prices at the pump because stations update their prices at different times. Prices can also change during the day according to each station’s commercial policy.

Fuel costs have risen sharply over the past five years. Average gasoline prices increased from 5.69 lei per liter in 2021 to 8.62 lei in 2026, while diesel rose from 5.65 lei to 9.12 lei. The National Authority for Consumer Protection has begun nationwide inspections to examine price changes, commercial markups and compliance with Law No. 162/2026. Fines could reach 500,000 lei.
