France's star forward Kylian Mbappe has claimed the top position in FIFA's World Cup Power Rankings, overtaking Lionel Messi of Argentina. This shift occurred following the conclusion of the Round of 16 matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The updated rankings, released by FIFA on Wednesday, place Mbappe at number one with an attacking score of 8.71. Messi has dropped to second place with a score of 8.45. Norway's Erling Haaland ranks third with 8.04, followed by England captain Harry Kane in fourth place with 7.41.

The FIFA Power Rankings, a new feature for the 2026 World Cup powered by Aramco, utilize comprehensive match data to objectively evaluate player performances throughout the tournament. Outfield players are scored on a scale of 0 to 10 across three key categories: attacking, creativity, and defending. Goalkeepers are assessed separately for their performance in defending the goal and in-possession play. These rankings are updated after every match.

France also leads in two of the three outfield categories. Michael Olise tops the creativity rankings with 8.19, and Dayot Upamecano leads the defending category with 7.67. In goalkeeping, Portugal's Diogo Costa holds the top spot with a score of 8.89.
