Funvisis Counts 1,368 Aftershocks Following Double Seismic Event

Venezuela has registered at least 1,368 seismic aftershocks since two significant earthquakes struck the country on June 24, according to the Venezuelan Foundation of Seismological Investigations (Funvisis).

Between June 24 and July 18, Funvisis recorded these seismic events over 576 hours. The majority of the aftershocks were of low magnitude, with most measuring below 3.9 degrees, though some exceeded 4.0 degrees. The seismic activity is concentrated in the central-northern part of Venezuela, particularly in the states of Carabobo, Aragua, Miranda, La Guaira, and the Capital District.

These persistent tremors have amplified the distress of a population still grappling with the emotional aftermath of the initial earthquakes, which registered magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. The official toll from the disaster reported on July 19 indicated 5,208 deaths, 16,740 injuries, and 17,907 people left homeless, underscoring the ongoing crisis.
