Funvisis reports magnitude 3.8 earthquake near La Tortuga Island

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake shook the waters near Venezuela's La Tortuga Island on Saturday morning, according to the Venezuelan Foundation of Seismological Research (Funvisis). The tremor occurred at 7:40 a.m. at a depth of 28.4 kilometers.

Its epicenter was located 17 kilometers west of the island, at coordinates 10.928 N-65.485 O. This seismic event is the latest in a series of tremors recorded across Venezuela this week, highlighting ongoing geological activity.

Earlier on Thursday, August 27, Funvisis reported a magnitude 3.4 earthquake near La Victoria in Aragua state. That quake occurred at 6:48 p.m. with a depth of 7.2 kilometers and its epicenter 20 kilometers northeast of the town.

Before that, two other earthquakes were registered: a magnitude 4.2 near Güiria, Sucre state, at 8:58 a.m., and a magnitude 3.6 near Mérida at 11:36 a.m. The latter prompted precautionary evacuations of buildings, though no damage or injuries were reported.

Adding to the seismic activity, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake was felt in parts of Caracas, Miranda, and Aragua on Thursday evening at 8:38 p.m. This activity follows significant seismic events in June, including two major earthquakes on June 24 that struck northern Venezuela, particularly affecting La Guaira state.
