Funvisis reports new 3.2-magnitude earthquake near La Guaira

A new magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck west of La Guaira early Saturday, according to the Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research, known as Funvisis.

The tremor occurred at 5:41 a.m., with its epicenter 39 kilometers west of La Guaira and 40 kilometers northwest of Los Teques. Funvisis measured its depth at 5 kilometers.

The agency said it recorded 96 earthquakes across Venezuela between Aug. 28 and Sept. 3, ranging from magnitude 1.4 to 4.4. Its institutional report also published a map of accumulated seismic activity during the first 1,704 hours of continuous monitoring since the sequence began on June 24. By 6 p.m. on Sept. 3, technical systems had counted 1,915 seismic events nationwide.

Funvisis reiterated that seismic activity does not follow predictable patterns. The latest figures were reported as part of the recovery process following a catastrophe 10 weeks earlier. The latest official balance, presented on Aug. 24 by National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez, put confirmed deaths at 6,509. Rodríguez said state medical services had treated 226,696 people and rescue teams had brought 6,462 citizens to safety.

During reconstruction, authorities reported delivering 335 homes to affected families and removing 600,790.70 tons of debris, representing 28.61% progress in clearing urban areas. Provea nevertheless urged the government to update and publish epidemiological and missing-person figures continuously. “We demand that the Venezuelan state update and publish both figures continuously.
