Gallery Yoojung Presents Kwon Doo-hyun’s Solo Exhibition “Width, Length, Height and Depth”

Blue, orange and red build up in layers until they become a single field of color. Up close, the paintings reveal the texture of brushstrokes and paint. From a distance, those separate traces merge into one tone.

Kwon Doo-hyun’s solo exhibition “Depth” runs through Oct. 9 at Gallery Yoojung in Seoul’s Mapo-gu district. The show opened on Sept. 29 under the theme “Color remains there for a long time,” presenting time and space accumulated within color.

The exhibition is the third installment of Gallery Yoojung’s series “Width, Length, Height and Depth.” The earlier exhibitions, “Width” and “Length,” considered the breadth of the image and the movement of the viewer’s gaze. This show turns instead to the depth produced by color repeatedly layered over time.

Kwon repeatedly adds and removes paint. Brushstrokes made at different moments remain layered on the surface, creating a sense of space within a plane. After working at HALLE 14, a contemporary art platform in Leipzig, Germany, he has continued combining the formal language of Western contemporary painting with Eastern modes of thought.
