Gang arrested for staging accidents to claim 100 million won in insurance

Two men in their 30s face charges for allegedly orchestrating traffic accidents to defraud insurance companies of over 150 million won. The suspects have been transferred to prosecutors, with one arrested and sent to prosecution while the other was sent without detention.

Authorities revealed that the two individuals are accused of staging 77 traffic accidents between September 2016 and May 2024 in the Gyeyang District of Incheon. They allegedly used motorcycles to deliberately cause collisions, collecting approximately 150 million won in insurance payouts.

Their methods reportedly involved intentionally bumping their arms into the side mirrors of vehicles driving in narrow alleys or deliberately pushing their motorcycles into the rear of vehicles that were reversing. Following these staged accidents, they would demand insurance money for purported medical expenses and settlement fees.

An investigation was launched based on suspicions of insurance fraud reported by insurance companies starting in the latter half of last year. One suspect had evaded police summons but was recently apprehended in the Gyeyang District. Police are currently investigating whether the suspects were involved in any further insurance fraud schemes.
