Gang gets 7-10 years for Jincheon home invasion targeting gambling funds

A gang of three men has received prison sentences ranging from seven to ten years for a brazen daytime home invasion in Jincheon, South Korea. The group targeted a residential home, acting on a tip that it held funds from an illegal online gambling operation. The robbery, however, was ultimately unsuccessful.

The main perpetrator, identified as A, received a 10-year sentence, while accomplices B and another individual were sentenced to eight and seven years, respectively. The court cited the thorough planning, including two reconnaissance trips to the house in January and February, as justification for the severe penalties.

The incident occurred on March 9, when the men, armed with a collapsible baton, entered the home and attempted to tie up the four family members. They demanded the location of the safe, but one family member managed to escape through a window, thwarting the robbery. The information about the funds was reportedly provided by two individuals, identified as C and another, who were former prison acquaintances of one of the defendants. These two individuals have also been indicted for conspiracy to commit robbery.

While the court acknowledged the severity of the planned crime, it also considered mitigating factors such as the relatively minor injuries sustained by the victims, the fact that the robbery was an attempt, and the defendants' cooperation in apprehending accomplices. The two individuals who provided the information face charges of preparing for robbery.
