Gangs using Airbnb-type rentals as drug stash houses, top Belgian official says

Criminal organizations in Belgium are exploiting short-term rental platforms, similar to Airbnb, to operate as stash houses for illicit goods and activities. Ine Van Wymersch, Belgium's national drug commissioner, highlighted this growing concern, noting that these flexible rental arrangements are being used to store and pack drugs, as well as hide weapons and cash.

The commissioner pointed out that organized crime is benefiting enormously from the rise of e-commerce, which facilitates these new operational methods. "More criminal organisations are using these Airbnb platforms etc as a stash place for money, drugs, weapons or people," Van Wymersch stated. This shift represents a significant challenge for law enforcement, as it moves criminal operations away from traditional, more easily monitored locations into the decentralized and often anonymous world of short-term rentals.
