Gangwon beats Anyang for first time in a decade, with coach Jung Kyung-ho’s leadership on display

Gangwon FC ended a decade-long winless run against Anyang with a 3-0 victory, even after losing several regulars to national-team duty and injury.

Jung Kyung-ho’s side won at Anyang Stadium on Sept. 6 in the 27th round of the 2026 K League 1 season. The result lifted the provincial club to fourth place with 40 points. It also ended Gangwon’s run of two draws and three losses against Anyang since the teams’ return to the top division.

Gangwon entered the match without defenders Lee Ki-hyuk and Shin Min-ha and midfielder Lee Seung-won, who had been called up to the Asian Games squad. Forward Kim Dae-won and defender Kang Tu-ji were also unavailable because of injury and other factors.

It was difficult even to put together the center-back pairing, but I communicated with the senior players and actively reflected their thoughts in the game plan. I asked everyone to approach it as if they were the coach, and it really felt as if everyone had become the Gangwon FC coach.

Jung responded by using summer signing Karim as a fullback who also filled the role of a central defender. Karim scored the opening goal in his regular-league debut, while Kim Geon-hee and Mo Jae-hyun added the other goals. The win gave Gangwon more than an overdue result. It also offered a new player an immediate confidence boost.

Jung said the team had struggled to put together a center-back pairing, so he communicated with senior players and actively incorporated their views into the plan. He told the squad to approach the match as if every player were Gangwon’s coach, and said the team had done exactly that.

Gangwon will face second-place Jeonbuk in Gangneung on Sept. 9 before playing Gimcheon in Gimcheon on Sept. 13. Jung said the club’s goal was not the Asian Football Confederation Champions League but reaching Final A, the league’s top six. His approach centers on organized, energetic football, high pressing and quick attacks, with players’ ideas treated as part of the team’s collective intelligence.
