Gas Leak Explosion Injures Elderly Man, Damages Home in Quito

An elderly man sustained injuries and a house suffered severe damage following a gas leak explosion in the Lucha de los Pobres Bajo sector of Quito, Ecuador. The explosion occurred on Tuesday morning, prompting an immediate response from the Fire Department, which provided assistance to the injured individual.

Video footage from a security camera captured the dramatic moment of the blast. The recording shows flames bursting from the front door, which was dislodged by the force of the explosion. Debris was thrown into the street, and the windows and facade of the building sustained damage. Neighbors reported being startled by the explosion and feeling a vibration, later assisting in clearing the street of glass fragments and debris.

The injured man, an 80-year-old, suffered first-degree burns to his face, neck, hands, and feet. He was reportedly cooking at the time of the incident and may not have noticed the gas leak from the hose. The house was rendered uninhabitable due to the extensive damage, forcing the man to relocate to live with relatives.

Following the incident, firefighters reiterated the importance of safety measures when a gas odor is detected. They advised against igniting matches, candles, or electrical appliances, and recommended opening doors and windows for ventilation before evacuating the premises and contacting emergency services. The fire department also explained that a deflagration is a rapid combustion resulting from a gas leak in an enclosed space igniting suddenly. They stressed the need for regular maintenance of gas installations to prevent such accidents.
