Gaza flotilla activist: Engaging with IDF was main goal, not humanitarian aid

The main objective of recent flotillas attempting to reach Gaza was to confront the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) and highlight the Palestinian cause, rather than to deliver humanitarian aid, according to a key organizer. Rosa Martinez, co-vessel organizer for the Adalah campaign and part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, stated that media portrayals of the missions as solely humanitarian were a misrepresentation.

I think that's kind of flattening what it is that we're doing. Yes, there is aid. The aid that we have isn't sufficient to the structural issues in a post 'ceasefire' Gaza.

"For me, as someone who, I think at this juncture in history, is very wedded to direct action, I feel like directly confronting the Israeli occupation forces [IDF] at sea as we try to break this 20-year genocidal siege... is a historic responsibility," Martinez said in a Palestinian Youth Movement NYC Instagram video. He emphasized that while aid was present, it was insufficient to address the "structural issues in a post 'ceasefire' Gaza."

Martinez, who was arrested on May 18 when his vessel was intercepted by Israeli naval forces along with 54 other ships, described his four-day detainment as a "waking nightmare." However, he contrasted his experience with the suffering of Palestinians. The activist, also known as Rudy, has a history of activism, including participation in City University of New York protest encampments, and has faced charges related to such activities.

He further stated that the flotilla effort allowed his movement to explore expanded tactics.
