Gaza: Israeli strike kills eight near market

Eight people were killed and 22 injured in an Israeli airstrike near a market in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the Gaza Strip on Friday, Palestinian civil defense reported. The Israeli military claimed the strike targeted a "terrorist cell" belonging to the Islamic Jihad organization.

The incident took place amid a funeral procession for an individual who had been killed in another Israeli attack earlier the same day. Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesperson for the civil defense agency, confirmed that the local hospital received eight bodies and 22 wounded individuals following the strike. The civil defense agency operates as a rescue service under the authority of Hamas.

The Israeli military issued a statement acknowledging the strike on what it described as a "terrorist cell" in central Gaza. The forces "are aware of allegations that several uninvolved people were hit as a result of this strike. The results of the strike are being examined," the army added.

Palestinian civil defense and hospital sources also reported the deaths of five other individuals, including two women, in separate Israeli strikes on Friday. One of these victims was the person whose funeral was underway at the time of the Nuseirat market strike. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 1,127 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 2025, a figure the UN considers reliable. Israel has reported five soldiers and one contractor killed in the Palestinian territory.
