Gaza reports eight dead in Israeli airstrikes

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza early Thursday killed at least eight people, a spokesperson for the Gaza Strip's civil defense told AFP. Seven individuals died in attacks on residential buildings, while another person was killed in the Al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City. The Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported 15 injured from the strikes, though it was not immediately clear if any were in life-threatening condition.

Since a fragile ceasefire was established between Israel and Hamas in October, daily violence has persisted in the Gaza Strip. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, which the UN considers credible, Israel has killed at least 936 people since the truce began. Both Hamas and Israel have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement.

The initial phase of the truce involved the exchange of Hamas's Israeli hostages for Palestinians held by Israel. However, the transition to the second phase, which would include Hamas's disarmament and a gradual Israeli military withdrawal, has stalled for months. Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced he had ordered the military to take control of over 70 percent of the Gaza Strip. The leader of Hamas's armed wing, Mohammed Odeh, was killed in an Israeli airstrike last week, following the death of his predecessor, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, on May 15 in a similar attack.
