GCC Calls for ‘Firm’ International Stance on Houthi Attacks

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is calling for a resolute international response to Houthi militia attacks, warning that assaults targeting Saudi Arabia and commercial shipping could destabilize regional security and international navigation. The GCC expressed full solidarity with Riyadh in its efforts to confront threats to its security and sovereignty.

GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi welcomed the UN Security Council's August 7 statement condemning Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia since July 13 and maritime attacks since July 22. He described the Houthi actions as "repeated terrorist attacks" that flagrantly violate Saudi sovereignty and directly threaten its security, stability, and territorial integrity. Targeting commercial vessels and threatening maritime shipping lanes, he stated, constitutes a dangerous escalation jeopardizing regional security.

Albudaiwi urged the international community to uphold its responsibilities, adopt a firm stance to hold the Houthi group accountable, and work towards an immediate halt to these aggressions. He reiterated the GCC states' unwavering support for Saudi Arabia in protecting its sovereignty, stability, and the safety of its citizens and residents. The GCC's statement follows a Houthi escalation since July, which has heightened concerns over regional security and international shipping, prompting condemnation from Gulf and Arab states and warnings from regional and international officials.

The UN Security Council, in its August 7 statement, condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and commercial vessels. Council members warned that rising tensions in Yemen could undermine peace efforts and threaten international peace and security. They reaffirmed support for Yemen's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, urging the Houthis to de-escalate and backing UN envoy Hans Grundberg's efforts for a Yemeni-led political settlement.
