Gen. Moses Ali, the 'Lion of Adjumani's' Final Chapter

Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, a figure of enduring presence in Ugandan public life for over half a century, has passed away at 87. His career was a complex tapestry woven through soldiering, law, rebel command, and high-level government service, mirroring Uganda's own turbulent post-independence journey.

Supporters hailed him as the "Lion of Adjumani," recognizing his resilience and deep roots in the West Nile region, which served as his political base. Critics, however, remembered his controversial role during Idi Amin's regime. Ali navigated war, exile, assassination attempts, and political upheavals, consistently surviving and remaining a significant political force.

His public life intersected with nearly every major political era in Uganda since independence. He served in the Uganda Army under President Milton Obote, rose rapidly after Idi Amin's 1971 coup, fled into exile following Amin's fall, returned as a rebel leader against Obote's second government, and reconciled with President Yoweri Museveni after the National Resistance Army took power in 1986. He later became one of Uganda's longest-serving ministers and deputy prime ministers.

Even at 87, Ali remained a Member of Parliament for Adjumani West, having won re-election in 2026. Though he exited the Cabinet in the new administration, his continued parliamentary presence symbolized a political longevity few could match. His supporters viewed him as a symbol of resilience, patriotism, and unparalleled experience, while critics saw him as a survivor of every political system. Regardless of perspective, Moses Ali was impossible to ignore.

Born April 5, 1939, in Adjumani District, Ali's early life was shaped by his West Nile origins and education in missionary schools. His commitment to learning was exceptional for his generation of officers; he earned a law degree from Makerere University, completed legal practice studies, pursued military training in Israel and the UK, and even obtained a Master of Arts in Intelligence Studies from American Military University in 2015.
