Gen. Moses Ali to Receive State Funeral As Burial Programme Takes Shape

Uganda's late Gen. Moses Ali will be honored with a state funeral following a directive from President Yoweri Museveni. The official burial program is expected to be released on Sunday after consultations between the government and Gen. Ali's family.

Minister of State for Defence Huda Olero announced the decision on Saturday after meeting with the family at Nakasero Hospital. Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda will communicate the final program after a harmonization meeting with the family scheduled for Sunday.

According to a tentative family program, funeral activities commence Sunday with special Islamic prayers in Kampala. The first prayer, Salat al-Janazah, is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at Naguru Mosque, where Gen. Ali was a regular worshipper. A second prayer will take place at Kibuli Mosque at 2:00 p.m., followed by the final prayer at the Uganda National Mosque in Old Kampala at 4:00 p.m., to be led by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje.

Following the prayers, Gen. Ali's body will be returned to his residence in Naguru for an overnight vigil. On Monday morning, his body will lie in state at Parliament before being moved to Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in the afternoon for public viewing. It will then be airlifted to the West Nile sub-region for final funeral rites. Gen. Moses Ali is expected to be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Adjumani District on Tuesday, July 21.

Gen. Ali passed away on Saturday at Nakasero Hospital, where he had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for several days due to recurring heart-related complications.
