General Dhiraj Seth Assumes Command as India's New Chief of Army Staff

General Dhiraj Seth officially took command as India's 31st Chief of Army Staff on Tuesday, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi upon his retirement. This leadership transition occurs as the Indian Army intensifies its efforts in force modernization, organizational restructuring, and long-term capability development.

General Seth has a background in strategic planning and capability development at Army headquarters, where he influenced the service's modernization trajectory and force structuring initiatives. The defense ministry noted his contributions in aligning operational needs with emerging technologies and future battlefield requirements. Seth, whose father was a three-star general, is recognized for his work in advancing military modernization.

On his final day, outgoing Chief General Dwivedi emphasized the importance of synergy among the three services for theaterization, a reform aimed at integrating military resources for future conflicts. "In future, wars will be more joint, integrated and theatre-oriented," Dwivedi stated, adding, "The direction of the armed forces is clear: to see together, take decisions together and act together."

General Seth, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in 1986. He is the first officer from this corps to lead the Army in nearly 30 years, with his tenure set to last until August 31, 2028. His career includes commanding various units, including an armored regiment, an armored brigade, a counter-insurgency force, and strike corps. Seth has also attended advanced military courses in Paris, Monterey, and New Delhi.
