Generation Deutschland official injured at Schwerin demo

A demonstration organized by the AfD's youth wing, Generation Deutschland, in Schwerin, Germany, turned contentious, resulting in one person being injured amidst clashes with counter-protesters.

The event, titled "Day of German Youth," drew approximately 400 participants, according to police. Simultaneously, nearly 500 counter-demonstrators gathered, attempting to drown out the AfD youth group's rally with loud chants. Police maintained a separation between the two groups using fences.

Michael Schumann, identified as the Hamburg regional chairman of Generation Deutschland, sustained injuries during an altercation. Reports suggest Schumann was attacked while en route to the rally's meeting point. He received medical attention at the scene, though the severity of his injuries and whether he was transported to a hospital remain unclear, as stated by the police.

The AfD Hamburg has publicly accused Antifa of carrying out the assault, a claim that the police have not yet corroborated. Authorities are currently investigating three individuals on suspicion of assault. Following the main rally, a procession by the youth organization through Schwerin was temporarily obstructed by counter-demonstrators staging sit-ins, leading to a route change. A significant police presence, including officers from other German states, was deployed to manage the situation in Schwerin.
