Genesis GV80 Hybrid SUV to Launch Next Month with Enhanced Power and Efficiency

Genesis is introducing a next-generation 2.5-liter turbo hybrid system with its GV80 SUV next month, promising a significant leap in both efficiency and performance. The new powertrain aims to deliver an electric vehicle-like driving experience, focusing on quiet operation and responsive acceleration.

The hybrid system combines a starter motor for engine ignition and generation with a drive motor for propulsion and regenerative braking. This parallel structure results in a combined output of 352 horsepower and 54.0 kgf·m of torque, marking a substantial increase over the current 2.5 turbo model. Genesis reports the GV80 hybrid can accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in approximately 7.1 seconds, with a projected fuel economy improvement of over 25% based on internal testing.

A key innovation is the integration of a water-cooled hybrid battery system, a first for Hyundai Motor Group's hybrid technology. This system offers more efficient temperature control, allowing for higher discharge power and more active battery utilization compared to air-cooled systems. Genesis has also expanded the use of the EV mode, particularly at lower speeds up to 30 km/h, to ensure quiet operation in environments like underground parking garages and to provide immediate acceleration upon merging into traffic.

The system's responsiveness is highlighted by its ability to re-accelerate 18% faster than the gasoline-only model when cruising at 100 km/h, offering agile performance for overtaking. Genesis has also incorporated specialized hybrid features such as "Stay Mode," "Hybrid Layered Predictive Control," and "Smart Regenerative Braking."

Alongside the powertrain, Genesis revealed design updates for the GV80 hybrid, including a redesigned exterior grille and wheels for a more luxurious appearance. The interior will feature four new two-tone color options and two real wood garnish choices, with quilting patterns also available. Lee Si-hyuk, head of the Genesis Division, expressed confidence that the new powertrain will provide a differentiated driving experience, balancing efficiency, quietness, and performance to proactively meet market changes and customer needs.
