German Air Defense Troops Deployed to Turkey for NATO Mission

The German Bundeswehr is sending its air defense troops to Turkey as part of NATO's efforts to bolster security along the alliance's southeastern flank.

Soldiers from the Air Defense Missile Group 24, based in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, were formally farewelled before their deployment. According to the Federal Ministry of Defense, their mission is to support NATO's air defense in the region and to take over from a U.S. unit.

The deployment involves around 150 German soldiers and a Patriot missile unit. It is scheduled to commence at the end of June and continue until September. During their stay, the German contingent will primarily collaborate with Turkish and U.S. partners.

This deployment is part of NATO's broader strategy to strengthen its missile and air defense capabilities in Turkey, which were enhanced following the Iran conflict. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized Germany's increasing commitment to the alliance, stating, "Germany is taking on more responsibility within NATO. We are doing this on the eastern flank, in the High North – and now also for several weeks in Turkey on NATO's southeastern flank."

Colonel Lieutenant Miladin Dujovic, commander of the Air Defense Missile Group 24, highlighted the critical importance of air defense in the current climate of "increasing uncertainty, growing threats, and an ever more complex security situation."
