German Chancellor Merz Reshuffles Cabinet Amidst Resignations

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced several changes within his government on Friday, including the departure of Health Minister Nina Warkenová and the anticipated resignation of Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder. These personnel shifts come in the wake of Jens Spahn, the leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, stepping down amid controversy over surrogacy.

Warkenová is expected to transition to head the government's chancellery, replacing Thorsten Frei. Frei, in turn, is slated to take over Spahn's leadership role within the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. Carsten Linnemann, the CDU's general secretary, will reportedly assume leadership of the Health Ministry.

Spahn announced his resignation from the parliamentary leadership position on Saturday. His departure was prompted by pressure related to him and his husband becoming parents through a surrogate mother in the United States. Surrogacy is illegal in Germany, though raising a child born via surrogacy abroad is not prohibited. The CDU party, led by Merz, officially opposes surrogacy and advocates for maintaining the current legal framework, a stance Spahn himself previously held as former health minister, leading to accusations of hypocrisy.
