German Court Bans Bicycle Protest on Autobahn A5

The Hessian Administrative Court in Kassel has prohibited a planned bicycle demonstration on the A5 autobahn, upholding a ban previously issued by the Wetterau district. The court rejected an appeal filed by the demonstration's organizer, largely affirming the authorities' assessment of the significant risks associated with such an event.

The protest was intended to take place on Wednesday between the Bad Nauheim and Butzbach junctions, targeting the planned expansion of the busy highway. The organizer had sought to use the demonstration to voice opposition to the expansion project.

However, the Wetterau district had prohibited the event last Friday, proposing an alternative route along the federal road B3 instead. The organizer contested this decision, filing an urgent application with the Administrative Court of Gießen. The Gießen court initially denied the request, a decision that has now been confirmed by the higher administrative court in Kassel.

According to the court's statement, the decision is not subject to further appeal within the administrative court system. The ruling emphasizes the court's prioritization of public safety and traffic flow on major highways, deeming the risks of a bicycle protest on the A5 to be too high.
