German Culture Minister Weimer Plans to Step Down After One Term

Wolfram Weimer, Germany's Minister of State for Culture, has declared his intention to serve only one legislative term in office. The 61-year-old, who is not affiliated with any political party, stated his plan to step down after the current four-year period, emphasizing his passion for culture and media but also a growing desire for family time and personal freedom.

Weimer, who has been in office since May 2025, described his role as an "advocate for culture, not its controller." He noted that, excluding the defense ministry, his department's budget has seen the largest percentage increase.

The budget allocated to culture and media by the German Bundestag's budget committee was approximately 2.57 billion euros, exceeding the government's draft budget of around 2.5 billion euros for 2026. Despite this budgetary increase, Weimer has recently faced criticism from figures within the cultural scene. They accuse him of pursuing a politically motivated "culture war," citing his decisions to exclude three left-leaning bookstores from the German Book Prize and his alleged interference in the artistic freedom of the Berlinale film festival.

Before entering politics, Weimer had a career in journalism. He founded the Berlin-based magazine Cicero in 2003, serving as its editor until 2010. He previously worked for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and was editor-in-chief of Focus magazine until 2012. He later co-founded the Weimer Media Group with his wife, journalist Christiane Götz-Weimer. Concerns about potential conflicts of interest have also been raised regarding his position.
