German Cup Match Erupts in Violence, Police Injured

A German Cup match between SV Waldhof Mannheim and Kaiserslautern transformed into a battleground, marked by severe crowd disturbances, flares on the pitch, and a significant number of casualties. The regional derby, pitting teams from different German football leagues, was known for its intense rivalry, and this encounter lived up to that reputation with widespread chaos.

Tension escalated during the match, with ultras igniting numerous flares at halftime, creating dense smoke that obscured the field and delayed the game's resumption. A confrontation involving Kaiserslautern player Ritter sparked a brawl among players. Police, including mounted units, intervened to restore order. Tear gas was deployed, and confrontations occurred between supporters and law enforcement. A rival flag confiscated by one group was set ablaze. After a 20-minute suspension, the match resumed under a stern warning from the stadium announcer that any further incidents would lead to a definitive stoppage. Mannheim captain Klunter attempted to appeal to the fans to cease the disturbances.

Kaiserslautern ultimately clinched a dramatic 120th-minute victory with a goal from Kanate, advancing to the next round of the German Cup. However, the game's aftermath revealed a grim toll: 35 police officers were injured, and 85 individuals required medical attention, with eight transported to the hospital. Several fans were also detained.
