German Elections: Exit Poll Gives AfD 44.5% Victory in Saxony-Anhalt, CDU on 18.5%

The Alternative for Germany won 44.5% in Saxony-Anhalt according to exit polls broadcast by Germany’s public television network ARD, putting the far-right party well ahead of the CDU at 18.5%.

Asked whether the AfD would govern with the CDU, Siegmund said the central issue was that other political forces did not want to cooperate with his party. He added that governing required “state responsibility,” but warned that there would be no compromise on migration policy.

The projected results put the Greens and The Left at 9% each, the Social Democrats at 8%, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance at 5%, and the liberals at 2%. The BSW’s result would meet the parliamentary threshold.

CDU General Secretary Franziska Hoppermann ruled out cooperation with the AfD. “We do not cooperate with extremists and, above all, with those on the far right,” she told ARD after the exit polls were released.
