German killer nurse probed over dozens more deaths

German prosecutors are expanding their investigation into a palliative care nurse, suspected of killing dozens more patients. The man, identified by media as Ulrich S., is already serving a life sentence for the murders of 10 patients and attempted murder of 27 others.

Prosecutors in Aachen are now examining 121 suspicious cases potentially linked to the nurse, who worked in Wuerselen near Aachen. The investigation has led to the exhumation of nearly 40 bodies and could result in new charges next year. The earliest suspected incidents date back to September 2022.

In a separate but related inquiry, prosecutors in Cologne are investigating 18 further cases, with the earliest dating back to 2010. The nurse is believed to have worked in a clinic in Cologne before his time in Wuerselen.

During his previous trial, the court noted a "particular severity of guilt," which could prevent early release. Prosecutors described him as working "with no motivation" or empathy for his patients. The case draws parallels to that of nurse Niels Hoegel, convicted of murdering 85 patients, and a Berlin doctor recently sentenced for murdering 15 people.
