German Lawmakers: Taiwan-Germany Ties Should Be Free From China's Interference

Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung hosted a delegation of German parliamentarians, led by Till Steffen, Chairman of the German Parliament's Taiwan Friendship Group. The visit underscores deepening ties between Taiwan and Germany, particularly in the face of rising geopolitical tensions.

Steffen emphasized that interactions between Taiwan and Germany should remain free from Chinese interference. He affirmed the group's commitment to fostering stronger bilateral relations and cooperation within the German parliament. Both nations, he noted, share common ground in confronting the expansion of authoritarianism, highlighting opportunities for mutual learning and joint efforts to bolster democratic resilience and economic security.

Minister Lin echoed these sentiments, characterizing Taiwan and Germany as like-minded partners who value a rules-based international order. He expressed gratitude for Germany's consistent support for maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Lin reiterated Taiwan's dedication to collaborating with democratic allies to safeguard regional peace and enhance its self-defense capabilities.

The discussion also touched upon burgeoning cooperation in key technology sectors. Lin pointed to TSMC's investment in Germany as a move that will further strengthen the resilience of democratic supply chains in Europe. He positioned Taiwan as a reliable partner for Europe's "re-industrialization" and "re-armament" strategies, leveraging its expertise in semiconductors and advanced manufacturing.

This visit by the German parliamentary delegation, which includes members from various parties, is part of a broader diplomatic engagement. The delegation's itinerary includes meetings with high-ranking Taiwanese officials, including President Lai Ching-te, and various political party leaders, aiming to foster dialogue and explore avenues for enhanced collaboration.
