German Left Party Demands Full Probe into Islamist CSD Attack

The Left Party in Germany is calling for a comprehensive investigation into the Islamist attack that occurred during the Berlin Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrations. Clara Bünger, the party's spokesperson on domestic policy and deputy leader in the Bundestag, stated that "new information is coming to light every day."

Bünger specifically questioned the security lapse, asking, "How is it possible that a person classified as a high-risk individual was not monitored more closely?" She believes this issue should be a central topic for the Bundestag's interior committee, which was scheduled to meet on the matter. Bünger emphasized that political demands should follow, not precede, a thorough clarification of the facts.

She criticized the Federal Interior Minister for presenting a "finished interpretation" of the events shortly after the July 25 attack, without sufficient investigation. Bünger pointed out the minister's assertion of a lone perpetrator without evidence and the premature announcement of measures. The Left Party also expressed incomprehension regarding proposals from the Union party, such as examining the possibility of revoking German citizenship from dual nationals. Bünger noted that the perpetrator held only German citizenship, making deportation under such circumstances impossible.

A key question for the Left Party is the failure to transmit information held by the Joint Counter-Terrorism Center to the courts. Bünger stated, "We expect clear answers from the federal government." She argued that based on existing laws, the perpetrator could have been taken into regular custody if the court had possessed all the relevant information. The Left Party affirmed its solidarity with the queer community, asserting that demanding accountability is part of that support. Bünger rejected accusations of the Left Party having a "blind spot" regarding Islamism, emphasizing the party's opposition to Islamism as a queer-hostile and anti-feminist ideology.
