German Left Party Leader Open to Supporting CDU in Saxony-Anhalt Election

Luigi Pantisano, the leader of Germany's Left Party (Die Linke), has indicated a potential willingness to support a Christian Democratic Union (CDU) candidate for Minister-President in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Pantisano stated in a ZDF interview that his party has demonstrated its commitment to taking responsibility for the country in recent years. He emphasized that this stance is particularly relevant when the goal is to prevent the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party from forming a government.

We have in the last years as the Left shown that we take responsibility for this country.

Saxony-Anhalt is scheduled to hold state elections on September 9. Recent opinion polls suggest that the AfD is significantly ahead of the CDU. The current Minister-President and CDU candidate, Sven Schulze, might only secure reelection with the votes of the Left Party.

The CDU has consistently ruled out cooperation with both the Left Party and the AfD. Pantisano questioned whether Schulze would be prepared to accept responsibility after the election if he requires the Left Party's support. The AfD currently holds a clear lead in the polls for Saxony-Anhalt, with the Left Party positioned in third place.
