German library award goes to Hoyerswerda for strategic concept

The Brigitte Reimann City Library in Hoyerswerda has earned national recognition, receiving the "Library of the Year in Small Municipalities and Regions" award. The jury specifically praised the library's strategic concept, which is built upon four key pillars: democracy, education, sustainability, and participation.

According to the German Library Association (DBV), the award highlights the library's exceptional ability to integrate education, culture, and societal involvement. " In a time when trust in politics and democratic structures is tarnished, the Hoyerswerda City Library outstandingly combines education, culture, and societal participation, making democracy tangible in everyday life," stated Antje Theise, federal chairwoman of the DBV and a jury member.

The jury further commended the library for its strategically anchored democracy work, its consistently participatory approach, and its remarkable networking efforts. Theise described it as a model for future-oriented library work that is noteworthy and transferable nationwide.

The award, which comes with a 7,000 Euro prize, has been presented annually since 2020. This year, a total of 87 libraries applied for the two available prizes. The main "Library of the Year" award, with a 20,000 Euro prize, was given to the ZB MED – Information Centre for Life Sciences in Cologne.
