German Pension Insurance Warns of Phishing Email Wave

The German Pension Insurance (DRV) Baden-Württemberg is alerting the public to a significant increase in fraudulent phishing emails. These messages are designed to look like official communications from the DRV, aiming to trick recipients into divulging sensitive personal data.

Many fake emails, so-called phishing emails, are currently in circulation.

The scam typically involves a pretext, such as a supposed new data protection law, requiring individuals to submit information through a fake internet portal. The DRV stresses that it strictly adheres to secure communication channels. Personal data and payment details are never requested over the phone, via email, or through text messages. Instead, all official correspondence and data requests are handled through traditional postal mail or the DRV's secure online "Mein Kundenportal."

The goal of the phishing emails is to intercept this data.

While the DRV generally communicates through mail or its portal, there are rare exceptions. Employees may contact policyholders by phone only if the individual has initiated a request, such as an application for account clarification or a pension claim, and has provided a contact number for follow-up questions. The DRV urges all policyholders to exercise extreme caution and avoid clicking on any links within suspicious emails or text messages to protect themselves from cybercrime.
