German police officer to face trial over fatal 2025 shooting

A German court has cleared the way for a trial against a police officer accused of negligently causing the death of a 21-year-old man. The officer faces charges for the fatal shooting of Lorenz in a pedestrian zone in Oldenburg during an operation on Easter Sunday 2025. The Landgericht Oldenburg has accepted the indictment for negligent homicide, though it does not currently consider charges of manslaughter or murder.

According to the indictment, the 28-year-old officer allegedly shot Lorenz, who was Black, from behind at least three times, hitting him in the torso, hip, and head. Lorenz died later in the hospital. The shooting sparked widespread outrage and protests against police brutality and racism across Germany, with activists like "Gerechtigkeit für Lorenz" (Justice for Lorenz) citing racism as the primary cause of the young man's death.

The prosecution believes the officer mistakenly thought he was in a situation of self-defense.
