German police search for man suspected of sabotaging power grid

German police are searching for a man suspected of carrying out a series of acts of sabotage against the country’s electricity network, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said.

The suspected attacks include an attempt to damage an electrical transformer south of Düsseldorf in western Germany. The 48-year-old suspect is believed to be a climate activist because letters sent to authorities and media reportedly cited opposition to fossil fuels as justification for his actions.

Bild reported that police were investigating the transformer incident as the third suspected case of sabotage that week. The repeated incidents have highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure, the report said.

European countries have also warned of a Russian hybrid war intended to discourage support for Ukraine, pointing to a foiled drone attack at Leipzig airport in August as an example. Moscow has rejected those accusations.
