German railways to ban alcohol at stations to boost safety

Germany's national railway company, Deutsche Bahn, announced a nationwide ban on alcohol consumption at its stations, aiming to enhance safety and cleanliness for passengers and staff. The company stated that the measure is a response to increasing violence often associated with excessive alcohol use.

The ban will be implemented progressively across all 5,400 stations in Germany, with a target completion date of October 15. While some stations, including those in Cologne, Hamburg, and Munich, have already introduced the restrictions, others, such as two major stations in Berlin, will follow on September 1. The company plans to extend the measure nationwide thereafter.

She referenced a recent "brutal and senseless attack" where an intoxicated passenger assaulted a security guard during a ticket check, subsequently falling out of a moving train and injuring himself.

Violators of the new policy will be removed from the stations, and repeat offenders could face a permanent ban from station premises. However, the ban will not extend to licensed bars and restaurants within the stations. Passengers will still be permitted to carry sealed alcoholic beverages in their luggage or shopping bags. The prohibition also does not apply to alcohol consumption on trains, particularly on long-distance routes where alcoholic beverages are sold in dining cars.
