German Shipbuilder TKMS Withdraws Offer for Neighboring Yard

German shipbuilding giant TKMS has officially withdrawn its bid to acquire the neighboring shipyard German Naval Yards (GNYC) in Kiel. The decision comes after intensive negotiations failed to yield an agreement on the crucial economic framework for the transaction.

The acquisition of German Naval Yards Kiel would have been a nice option, but not a must.

Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS, stated that while the acquisition of GNYC presented an "attractive option," it was not essential for the company's operations. "We have carefully reviewed this possibility for potential space optimization and, after confirmatory due diligence, see no current necessity for an acquisition under the given parameters and conditions," Burkhard explained. He added that the bidder process has now concluded due to the lack of consensus on economic terms.

TKMS affirmed its capacity to manage its existing and future order backlog reliably and on schedule using its current facilities in Kiel and Wismar. The company indicated it would explore alternative strategies within Kiel to enhance its logistical flexibility. Both TKMS and German Naval Yards share a site in Kiel, with historical roots tracing back to the former Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW), founded in 1838. German Naval Yards was established from the former HDW surface shipbuilding division.

Notably, the defense contractor Rheinmetall had also submitted an offer for German Naval Yards. The withdrawal by TKMS leaves the future of the GNYC shipyard uncertain, though the company had previously expressed that an agreement was possible if economic conditions were met.
