German Shippers Fear Rhine Route Disruption Amid Severe Drought

German inland shippers are voicing growing concerns over the critically low water levels in the Rhine River, exacerbated by ongoing drought conditions. The situation threatens to disrupt a vital European transport artery.

According to Jens Schwanen, managing director of the Federal Association of German Inland Shipping (BDB), the water level at the Kaub gauge, a key indicator for navigation, is projected to fall to a single-digit value within the week. This drastic reduction could lead to the Rhine's shipping route being effectively split in its middle section.

"Due to a lack of precipitation, a single-digit value is forecast for the first time this week at the Kaub gauge, which is important for shipping and the economy," Schwanen told the "Rheinische Post."

The Rhine River is a crucial waterway for transporting goods throughout Germany and into neighboring European countries. Historically, low water levels, particularly during droughts, have caused significant logistical challenges, leading to reduced cargo capacity for ships and increased transportation costs.
