German Sprinter Ansah Fights Doping Ban Ahead of European Championships

German sprinter Owen Ansah is fighting a potential four-year ban proposed by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) just days before the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. NADA alleges Ansah refused a doping test on July 9th at his home, a violation of the German Athletics Federation's anti-doping code.

Our client Owen Ansah did not refuse to undergo a doping control at any time. He did not refuse to provide a sample at any time. Owen Ansah did not say or give the impression at any time that he did not want to undergo a doping control.

Ansah, who was set to compete in the 100m and 200m events, denies outright refusal. His lawyer, Rainer Tarek Cherkeh, stated that Ansah "at no time refused to undergo a doping control" and was not given sufficient notice by the controller, who reportedly arrived outside a pre-arranged window. Ansah claims he was under time pressure and had just used the restroom, making immediate sample collection impossible.

Despite the ongoing disciplinary proceedings, Ansah remains eligible to compete in individual events at the European Championships. However, the German Athletics Federation (DLV) has decided to exclude him from the relay teams to avoid potential disqualifications and the forfeiture of medals should a ban be imposed later. DLV performance director Jörg Bügner emphasized that the federation "stands by our athlete" while ensuring clarity for the championships.

After consultation with the coaching team and the athletes, and to create clarity for all involved here in Birmingham, we have decided that Owen Ansah will start as planned in the 100 meters and 200 meters at the European Championships, but will not participate in the relay competitions.

Ansah, who trains in Mannheim, has indicated that the doping control officer arrived outside the specified time frame. He is now focusing on his upcoming races, aiming to put the doping allegations aside. The German Sports Arbitration Tribunal will hear the case, with Ansah determined to clear his name and continue his athletic career.
