German teen Liebmann wins European swimming gold with world record

Johannes Liebmann, a 19-year-old German swimmer, delivered a stunning performance at the European Championships, winning the 1500m freestyle gold medal and shattering the world record with a time of 14:26.79. Liebmann's performance was nearly four seconds faster than the previous world record set by American Bobby Finke two years prior.

It was an unbelievable race from Johannes. Such a time cannot be planned, but the direction after the European record over 800 meters was already clear. We therefore expected a medal.

This victory marks Liebmann's second gold of the elite-class long-course European Championships, having also won the 800m freestyle event earlier. His rapid ascent in the sport has been remarkable, with his European record in the 800m in April first bringing him to wider attention. His coach, Bernd Berkhahn, who has a history of developing Olympic champions, has been instrumental in Liebmann's development since he moved to Magdeburg at age 16.

Liebmann's dominance was evident throughout the 1500m race. He established a fast pace early on, leading alongside Hungary's Zalan Sarkany, but quickly pulled away to secure a significant lead. The crowd at the Centre Aquatique Olympique rose to their feet in the final laps, cheering him towards the finish line. The confidence and composure Liebmann displays both in and out of the pool are seen as potentially intimidating factors for his competitors.
