German tourist dies in fatal hiking accident in Austrian Alps

A tragic hiking accident in the Austrian Alps has claimed the life of a 63-year-old German tourist. The incident occurred while the woman was hiking with her husband in the Kleinwalsertal region.

The couple had set out for Fellhorn, starting their hike from the upper station of the Söllereckbahn cable car. After taking a break, they decided not to continue towards Fellhorn but to return to the cable car station. It was during this return journey, approximately 500 meters from the Schlappoldeck, that the woman reportedly slipped and fell.

She fell an estimated 60 vertical meters down a scree slope. Her husband and other hikers immediately alerted rescue services. Due to the proximity of the German-Austrian border, the mountain rescue team from Oberstdorf in Bavaria was involved in the operation.

Despite the swift response from rescuers and a doctor, they were only able to confirm the woman's death at the scene. The accident serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with hiking in mountainous terrain.
